Time…Living Happily for Today!
by Brian J. Zahn - Certified Life Coach, Author and
Speaker
The essence of time is amazing. When it's broken down, we
have formulated that there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60
minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. However, when
you examine it a little closer, there is so much more to
time than just a formula of numbers.
Just the other day I had a friend tell me how they
couldn't believe that it's May already. By the time you
read this, of course it will be June, but no pun intended.
She was amazed that time is moving quicker the older she
gets. This got me thinking and I asked myself, is time
moving even faster today then it was in the past? When I
took a moment to review my life, the answer seemed clear.
My answer was no because I had found a way to slow down
time for myself, while keeping the mathematical formula in
check and the stars aligned.
Let me explain. There was a point in my life, as I'm sure
there was in yours, when I was in my late twenties and
early thirties when life seemed to just tick on by. One
day would come and the next would go. Days turned into
months, months turned into years then wammo....ten years
had past as quick as I could snap my fingers. So was the
time formula changing during this time? The answer of
course was no...there are still 60 seconds in a minute, 60
minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. What I realized
was that there was something more behind it. The answer
was all in my "perception" of where I was living at the
time.
Do you remember when we were younger that we couldn’t wait
to be older. This happens when we are kids. Our perception
was that things seemed better than they were at the given
moment. When we were eight we couldn’t wait to be twelve
so we could stay up late. Then we couldn’t wait to be a
sixteen so we could drive a car, which would lead into
wanting to be twenty-one so we could be the legal age of
21 so we could drink. However, what seemed to be missing
was the realization of living for today. When we were
first born we knew nothing about time. We were too busy
learning about everything around us. All we wanted to do
was play because it made us laugh and happy. There was no
perception of time. We had no idea about what the word
even meant. So as kids we just lived in the moment. And
here holds the key to the essence of "time" = the present
moment.
I understand that what's important to you, might not be
important to someone else. How you view things, might be
different from the person next to you and so on. Your
perception is the only one that matters. After all it's
your life and not someone else's. How you utilize your
time on earth is very important. Keeping this in mind,
take a deep breath and ask yourself a few questions, while
you are living in the present moment:
Are you taking the time to see the sunrise or sunset?
Are you taking the time to kiss your loved ones?
Are you taking the time smell the roses?
Are you taking the time to bring a smile upon your face?
Are you taking the time to feel happy in your heart?
Are you taking the time to appreciate what your life has
to offer?
Are you taking the time to be passionate about what you do
for work?
Are you taking the time to live your life with joy?
I'll agree with you that sometimes it's down right
impossible to not rely on time because society has based
our lives around it. I understand we all have to be at
work at a specific time and meet deadlines because of one
reason or another, however by understanding the essence of
the word “time”, maybe you'll now value your life a little
more then you did before. By simply acknowledging and
changing your perception it will allow you not to take
life for granted. Remember, the important thing is to
utilize your time wisely and happily. Once you learn how
to live your life for today, capture the beauty it has to
offer and absorb the moment, you'll soon find that time is
on your side. So take the time and start listening to the
beat of your heart, instead of the ticking of the clock.
